EMDR Therapy (EYE movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Have you pursued traditional talk therapy to deal with a past trauma or disturbing memory only to find that it was only helpful up to a certain point? Or maybe you don’t have a particular, specific trauma but there is something that no matter how hard you work on it, still feels stuck. Research shows that therapies that use eye movements and bilateral stimulation to work through traumas are more effective and less, well, traumatic than simply talk alone.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy is the most well-known, well-researched, and well-respected form of therapy that uses bilateral stimulation as a reprocessing tool. EMDR is conducted in “phases” and is a full, standalone therapy that includes a structured process to help reprocess old memories and events so they no longer affect you in ways that don’t work for you anymore. My clients report powerful shifts from using EMDR Therapy.
I am also trained in ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) and Brainspotting: two modalities developed by former EMDR trainers. These methods are also based on bilateral stimulation but use different techniques and processes. These modalities inform my work but my primary clinical tool is EMDR.
I’m currently working toward certification in EMDR. If you’d like to know more about the modality, here are some links to explore:
